The second archaeological area of the world, included by UNESCO among the sites that are World Patrimony of Mankind. We are not talking about a vase, a statue or a painting here. These are entire cities preserved from the past that offer an opportunity - unique in the world - to immerse yourself in the everyday life of those who lived in a magnificent era in the history of human civilization and one of the most famous historical tragedies - the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 a.d.

Why you shouldn't miss it

More than just a cultural visit, the archaeological areas around Vesuvio are an emotional human experience, especially when you can touch, with your own hands, the record of all of us that history has preserved.

Why you should experience it

The excavations at Pompei and Ercolano, for their capacity to restore the more human aspects of a great civilization, help us to reflect on how mankind - all mankind - beyond the differences of their historic eras - are alike. Alike in love, in their search for beauty, in their love for life and in their desire for order and domestic peace, and also in their reaction to tragedy, fear and catastrophe.

To be avoided if

Or, more simply you don't like walking, for hours, on slabs of authentic lavic basalt (low-heeled shoes only). If it is sunny, you must wear a hat (there are few trees). If it is rainy, a raincoat is obligatory (there is little shelter), no luggage and no trolleys (the roads are very uneven). As far as photography is concerned, only personal use photo taking is allowed and setting up tripods etc., is forbidden. Emotions, on the other hand, are on the house. Take as many as you like. If you have some extra time

In the city of Pompei is one of the best known and miraculous sanctuaries in Italy. It is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary and is a destination for pilgrims and faithful from all over the world. It is located in the centre of the city, overlooking a large, beautiful piazza and is a nice spot for a rest or a walk (and, of course, a chance to enjoy some excellent Italian "gelato", i.e. ice cream).
