Villa Marcella - Description
Villa Marcella is a charming house of 180 square meters (approximately 1940 square feet) which sleeps eight persons, with a garden and a terrace with a wide and splendid view of the sea. It is equipped with air conditioning. It is at approximately 1 km (half a mile) from the sea and at 3 km (2 miles) from the center of Amalfi and the beach. Telephone and parking are available upon request.
It has three bedrooms, a large living room, two bathrooms, a terrace and a garden.
Villa Marcella is part of a medieval building, that used to be an ancient Saracen watch tower. It is placed high up on a picturesque tract of rocky coast, at a height of approximately 100 meters (330 feet) above the sea level, and almost sheer above the sea itself. Every view of the seascape in this area is truly breathtaking.
Villa Marcella is part of a bunch of ancient houses that cling to the top of a rocky spur, all facing the sea and the sun, and surrounded by lemon growths. Here the authentic locals live their life, with its quiet rhythm, and there is no crowd of tourists.
The tourist spots of the coast, though, are all right at hand, with the splendid Cathedral of Amalfi to begin with.
The structure of Villa Marcella is the one of the ancient houses of the coast of Amalfi.
You will reach it walking uphill along a short pedestrian alley for approximately 20 meters (20 yards). Once beyond the main door, you will find yourself in a small garden, closed on three sides by white walls, and open on the fourth side on a spectacular view of the coast and of the sea.
Indeed, looking down you will see the steep cliff that dives into the blue sea, covered by the luminous green of the terraces where lemon pergolas are grown. In front of you, a high rocky spur, stands against the sky, sheer above the sea. The famous and ancient monastery of Santa Rosa, with its unmistakable fan-shaped profile, clings to the top of this spur.
You will find that the small garden of Villa Marcella is a very pleasant place to relax "al fresco": the area that is closest to the house is tiled, and right in front of the view there is a long brickwork bench, shaded by a bougainvillea pergola. Another pergola, made with lemons and jasmines, overlooks the garden and perfumes the air. On the terrace you will also find a table with chairs and a barbecue to prepare your outdoor meals.
Inside the villa, the rooms are spacious and with high ceilings. Indeed, the rooms still keep their ancient vaulted ceilings or the ancient roofs made of wood beams. The floors are tiled with majolica tiles which have splendid designs and colors, and which are hand-made by local artisans. All the rooms have windows, with wood shutters, which frame a splendid view of the blue of the sea and of the sky and of the green of the coast.
Two of the bedrooms have a double bed, and one has one double bed and a bunk bed (two single beds, one on top of the other).
One of the three bedrooms has an en-suite bathroom with a shower. The second bathroom can be entered from the corridor. It is nice and roomy, and you will find one by the other both a bath tub and a shower.
The living area is comfortable and large, furnished with table and chairs, a sofa with armchairs, a satellite television. On one side of the living room there is the cooking area, which has many useful cabinets, and which is directly connected to the terrace by a glass door.
The kitchenette is equipped with a four-burner electric cooker, an oven, a washing machine, a refrigerator with freezer.
Telephone is available upon request.
The furnishing is simple and comfortable.
To reach the beach you have several options. You can board the bus that stops at 20 meters from the house and reach the beach of Amalfi. From there you will be able to board small ferries that will take you to splendid inlets along the coast.
One of these inlets, called the beach of Santa Croce, can be reached on foot from Villa Marcella. It is a walk not to be missed, if you don't mind descending 330 steps cut into the rock sheer above the sea. To get back up, anyway, you will be able to board one of the small ferries that will take you back to the quay of Amalfi in 10 minutes of amazing navigation. From the quay of Amalfi you will be able to get back home by bus.
Restaurants and bars are open during the good season on all these beaches. You will also be able to rent beach umbrellas and deck chairs, as well as board small boats to reach lovely and secluded small beaches. In Amalfi you will also be able to dive and practice water sports.
Villa Marcella is a great starting point to visit the entire coast.
It is only 3 km (2 miles) from the quay of Amalfi, where you will be able to board ferries and mini-cruises to visit the islands of Capri and Ischia, Positano, Sorrento, Naples and Salerno.
The SITA buses link together the villages along the coast, and it is easy to reach Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Royal Palace of Caserta. The bus stop is at 20 meters (20 yards) from the house. The closest shops are at 800 meters (half a mile) from the house.
In case you arriving by car, you will be able to reserve a parking space.
Moreover, if you like hiking you will be able to easily reach the famous trail along the ridge of the mountains that overlook the Amalfi Coast. For its extraordinary beauty, made of precipices and breathtaking views, the trail is called "Sentiero degli Dei": Path of the Gods.
